This Changes Everything!

instrumentation: electronic
duration: 6:07
written in: 2005, revised 2008

One day in 2005, I found myself in a frustrating situation: I was trying to write chamber music, but all I wanted to listen to was early New Wave. The solution: put the cello duo on hold and do something with electronics instead. The result: This Changes Everything! — six minutes of genrequeer music that combines 80s synths, industrial drums, postminimalism, a fugue à la Wendy Carlos, and a big yellow buzzing ugly microtonal slow section — and somehow squeezes them all into something that vaguely resembles sonata form. In the years since, I've created many new versions of the piece, including one for soprano sax and electronics and one for clarinet, bass clarinet and electronics.
