Second Moon
instrumentation: voice (G#3 – C5) and piano
duration: 2 minutes

In 2016, Kayleigh Butcher and Christopher Narloch commissioned 15 composers to write short responses to the 15 songs of Arnold Schoenberg's Book of the Hanging Gardens. My contribution, “Second Moon,” gives a new flavor to the opening melody of "Als wir hinter dem beblümten tore," with a splash of Antônio Carlos Jobim and a pinch of Rebecca Sugar. The lyrics are one part quiet Chicago date night and one part German Romantic mystery.
