O Superfood is a mashup of 43 different tracks that cover a wide variety of stylistic ground: rock, pop, jazz, hip-hop, EDM, country, doo-wop, gamelan music, Baroque music, minimalism, German Romanticism and mid-century modernism. Unlike Nineteen, there’s no overarching concept; the connections between samples are pure free association.
I created the piece for an installation at the release party for Spektral Quartet’s Mobile Miniatures project — a set of ringtones for string quartet by composers such as Courtney Bryan, Erin Gee, Ted Hearne, Julia Holter, Matt Marks, Nico Muhly, Shulamit Ran, Jay Alan Yim and Katherine Young. The installation consisted of telephones from various eras, which you could pick up to hear additional, non-ringtone pieces. O Superfood played on a loop from the receiver of a 90s-style transparent plastic cradle phone full of colored lights.
